set out runnin' but I take my time
a friend of the devil is a friend of mine
Wellie is never really what people anticipate when they hear she's the head of the guard and the wielder of the infamous Ascendant Sword. Wellie is fine with this; she's never cared what people thought of her and she's unlikely to start now. She became the head of the royal guard when she was only 15, when she walked past the armory in Diadema and the Ascendant Sword flew to her hand. The Ascendant Sword is a mythical blade that chooses a bearer of its own volition; sometimes once a generation but sometimes not for centuries. It has intelligence but cannot speak; it communicates mostly by pulsing different colors or yanking around whoever's holding it. It automatically makes whoever wields it an incredible fighter because it moves for itself and makes its own calls in a fight. Lunges when it wants to fight (which is basically always), doesn't allow anyone else but Sideways to touch it, can get itself back to Wellie wherever she is unless it is being magically restrained. If someone tries to grab the Sword it just jerks out of the way. If it doesn't get its way with Wellie it will throw a tantrum which is basically just Wellie trying to grab it and the Sword leaping out of her hand.
There was a lot of initial pushback when she became the head of the guard but she's proven her worth now and she has a loyal lieutenant so she's fine with it. She loves Sideways like a long lost sister; she's not very physical with anyone but her and frequently grapples her head and shoulders to yank her down when she tells a really stupid joke. She's always elbowing Sideways and telling her to shut up but the affection between them is so obvious that Sideways has never once taken it personal. She sighs a lot and often seems disappointed in other people's dumb decisions, a disappointment she is never shy about expressing. She's loyal to the Authority but uncomfortable around Mother the infrequent times the goddess is at court. This is actually because Wellie was around when the last batch of prophecy kids came through and she got very attached to the three survivors, Nightingale, Rhythm and Cherub. She had never expected Mother to send them all home and she still nurses a grudge over it. She helped train those three when she was only a little older than them, 15 and just barely in charge of the royal guard, and misses them still.

if I get home before daylight
I just might get some sleep tonight
