I notice you when you're noticing me
I'm a maze to you
Not long after Hawthorne acquired the BHG Vibe Check he stopped on some backwater planet for emergency repairs and left a day later with his ship running better than he'd ever seen it. He'd written a message to the engineer that had fixed it and gotten a snappy reply back; his thank-yous weren't appreciated here, when he'd had the audacity to steal their best man. Hawthorne had gone poking through his ship and found Wednesday and October deep into the engine chasm, and since then they'd never bothered to leave. Wednesday Day is very obviously a fake name but Hawthorne has never asked and he never will. Wednesday has tinkered with the ship enough that it's basically his own creation and in the case of an emergency nobody but him would ever be able to fix it; but the Vibe Check is one of the fastest ships in the known universe now, and with the right person at the helm she can pull some incredible maneuvers. Wednesday is not unfriendly but he can be hard to get to know because he only ever really talks to the ship or his bird, October. Toby is a rainbow lorikeet who can always be found either on or directly next to Wedneday's person. She suffers no one else to touch her but she loves Wednesday and would follow that man anywhere without hesitation. Wednesday talks to Toby like he might a fellow engineer, which is kind of weird for the crew but mostly ignored with good intentions.
In truth, when Wednesday was a kid he stuck a chip in at the base of his skull and then fiddled with it until it matched up with Toby's brainwaves and now he can understand her perfectly no matter where they are or what she's doing. It's not speaking per se but he understands her with perfect clarity and the same can be said for her. However she doesn't have the chip so Wednesday has to speak aloud, and this produces the weird one-sided conversations the rest of the crew hears. Toby can actually speak Common but she never has and nobody knows. Wednesday is friendly, smiley, and frequently out of it (because he's talking to Toby) but he's sweet on the crew and happy to help them do whatever. He never knows what job they're on but he's always glad to be a part of it. He wears really ugly mismatched outfits and always has some bright eyeshadow on, usually pink or neon green or dark blue. He likes to chew things and is usually cramming something weird in his mouth, like a metal piece from the engines or a pencil he's sketching plans with or gum. If Honey is around he makes sure Wednesday has gum. When Wednesday is fixing the engine he gets super one-track minded and can ignore literally anything else going on around him. This is much to the chagrin of the crew, when he meanders out in the middle of a firefight because he's thinking out loud.

wish me a wonder and wish me to sleep
you don't have to wander to hear when I speak
