I'm not leaving this place
unless I'm leaving with you
When Honey told the Vibe Check his childhood friend would be joining the crew for a bit none of them expected Wayward. Tall, leggy, beautiful, rich Wayward De Lange, of the Langian Family fortune, easy with a smile and quick to laugh. There's an inside joke among the crew now that of course Honey and Wayward are friends, as the two are easily the most beautiful men any of them have ever seen. When they put their heads together they are downright threatening. Wayward comes off as a little airheaded truthfully, forgetful and silly, but he's hiding a far bigger secret than anybody but Honey knows. Wayward has no issue with his family but wanted to experience a real job, and so worked at a tech factory as a technician. It was easy, boring work that gave him plenty of time to snoop around on the clock. It was there he met Dash, then called Leonidas. Leonidas was built to be a war-mind, a machine intended to control military forces for invasions halfway across the galaxy. He is an unshackled AI, a wildly illegal thing to be for a few reasons, but mostly that a great deal of things in the galaxy are now tech-based, and having an uncontrolled AI who could get into anything of their own willpower is a nightmare. Wayward met Dash a few weeks after he had become self-learning and the two quickly became friends. It was Wayward who started calling him Dash, after the AI admitted that he hated the name the people had given him.
Dash told Wayward that the people who had originally built him had been executed by the bankrollers behind his program just a week before Wayward had been hired, and that he had no interest in being the all-powerful war-mind the bankrollers desired. Wayward promised to see about getting him out but had little time to think on it before Dash told him privately that he was slated to be destroyed; that the local military had caught on to the AI experiment and his bankrollers were either fled, dead or in jail. There was a moment where Wayward should have turned away but what he said instead was, "Think you could live in a human brain?" Wayward, coming from a rich family, had a specialized data port installed in the back of his neck when he was a kid, and so he plugged Dash directly into this neural port with no hesitation at all. Dash is as of now living in his head and can traverse some internal systems; he's learning how to jump from Wayward's body to nearby tech systems and jump back. He can move most easily through Wayward's nerve system, so loiters in the back of his brain as a consistent, soft buzz. He's always talking and learning and can get pushy when he's curious. Wayward and Honey have talked every day for years; when Wayward needed to disappear he asked if Honey could make room on his ship and he did. He told Honey about Dash but Honey has told no one else. Wednesday apparently suspects something, as he looks at Wayward very oddly sometimes.
