the world's got the best of you
but you can always find me where the skies are blue
Jasper was barely 7 when his older sister Rubi vanished. She was his favorite sister; he loved her dearly and was devastated when she disappeared, his childish grief on par with their parents. She was the sibling closest to his age so with her gone he spent three years playing alone in the Pryde mansion and wandering through their woods. When she abruptly came home one night, off-kilter and limping but still definitely her Jasper was overjoyed. She spent a week in bed, refusing to talk and so disoriented that whenever she tried to get out of bed she'd fall and Jasper spent the week with her, trying to tell her jokes to cheer her up, burning with questions but doing his best to stay quiet. After a month Rubi whispered to their parents that she'd liked to be called Cherub; a week after that and she told Jasper one night when it was just them that she'd been in Bailia. He'd asked her as softly as he could what that was and the stories had spilled out of her, the secrets she'd been desperately trying to keep so that the family might accept her back. Stories of magic and fighting and chosen ones and loss.
So Jasper grew up hearing all about Bailia and every little detail Cherub could remember and spending long weekends with her looking for doors in the woods behind their property. Him and Cherub were peas in a pod, though their family didn't understand their strange half-conversations and Jasper's abrupt insistence on being called Jester (Cherub said offhand once that she thought it would've been the name they'd given him in Bailia and Jester seized on it). Jasper always dreamed about going back to Bailia and Cherub promised him that when they found a door she would not go alone. But when Jasper was 12 Cherub quietly disappeared; his parents put her in an institution, though of course they didn't explain such things to him, and when he was 15 she died. She couldn't stand to be stuck in the hospital alone and still struggled with her trauma and inevitably it wore her down. Jasper got a tattoo for her at 16, a big vine from his left shoulder to his wrist. It's ombre in the same way his hair is and stands out startlingly against his skin. He is determined still to get to Bailia, to explain to the people there what they did to his sister. Despite his rocky childhood he is a dreamer, air-headed and cheerful and always with a joke up his sleeve. He talks loud and laughs louder and thinks puns and dad jokes are genuinely hilarious. He is rarely, if ever, in a bad mood; optimistic and infectiously happy, Jester gets along with basically anyone.
