like the king, finds no peace
his work is never done
Ganymede was raised by a woman who absolutely hated him. Growing up, he never did have enough energy to ask her about that strange marking on his thigh. He watched the politics in the distant capital with a detached eye, never knowing that the late king was his father, that his mother was one of the man's many allies. Ganymede was stolen away immediately after birth and given to a stranger to keep him away from the throne, away from the destiny that the birthmark on his thigh spelled out for him. Only proper Rossarian kings got that strange mark, folks meant to ascend the throne. Ganymede lived in meddling ignorance until his birth family was wiped out and one of the few remaining allies brought guards to his ramshackle house to take him to the capital and the throne. Ganymede was a soft, sad, inexplicably gentle child who grew into the same sort of adult; it was expected that Rossore would eat him alive, that one of his many enemies would have him gracelessly assassinated before the first week was out. Strangely, that did not happen. Ganymede was assigned a Sword and a Dagger as is tradition and they proved far more able-minded than anyone had intended.
Ganymede is a good king, but one that his people are only tentatively beginning to trust. He strikes most locals as being weak, with his propensity for kindness and mercy, but he is earning the loyalty of the castle itself surprisingly swiftly. His guards, Cassini and Damascus, were expected to be unattached to the king and so easy to pay off; but Ganymede has genuinely befriended them, as strange as that is to the rest of the government. Ganymede is somewhat alienated from his people by virtue of being so painfully exposed to assassination attempts but he does his utmost to bridge that gap when he can. He did not know Tolliver's true job until months after he had befriended the spymaster, and by that time Tolliver had already privately decided that Ganymede was a king he would follow to the grave. Ganymede has since befriended Dr. Calliope as well, a staggering achievement that he still does not understand the size of. Ganymede is soft-spoken; surprisingly tall and leggy but shy and with a bad habit of folding himself down as small as possible. He is literally never alone, his Sword and Dagger always at his side, but he doesn't mind it overmuch. He was alone often in his childhood and often openly revels in the company. Ganymede loves fiercely and unapologetically and is loyal to a fault. He does not hold strictly to traditional hierarchy as he grew up poor.
